WAKE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM -
Myrtle Underwood Elementary School

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA

SUMMARY

Davis Kane Architects, Wake County Public School System and the local community successfully collaborated to revive Myrtle Underwood Elementary School, located in the Five Points neighborhood in Raleigh.

Built in 1927, the original classroom building interior was selectively demolished and underwent hazardous materials abatement, structural repair and masonry restoration. New roofing, windows, interior partitions, casework, finishes, plumbing, mechanical, sprinkler and electrical systems were installed.  A new classroom wing and multi-purpose wing were constructed using brick veneer and detailing to complement the existing building.  Natural light pours in through large windows, clerestories and roof monitors.

Extensive site work corrected traffic flow and storm drainage problems. An underground storm water retention structure was installed to comply with stringent storm water control requirements. Existing large trees were preserved and new play areas were installed. New courtyards provide space for student gardens and a shaded patio.

The Underwood Elementary project received the Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Community Appearance.
