Walter grew up in Kinston, North Carolina and attended North Carolina State University.

After becoming registered in 1977, Walter started a one man office; Walter Davis, Architect. The most significant work Walter has accomplished is the design of the Cary, North Carolina headquarters for SAS Institute, Inc. There have been more than thirty building projects ranging in size from twelve thousand square feet to three hundred ninety two thousand square feet. A master plan for an eighty-eight acre site in Austin, Texas and the first eighty-four thousand square foot building was done in 1987. Another master plan is in the works for seven buildings totaling one million four hundred thousand square feet of additional office space. This project is being planned for Eastern Section of the SAS property in Cary, North Carolina.

Walter has two grown children and enjoys involving them in his private life. Skiing in the winter, fishing in the summer, and golfing any time keeps Walter active and looking good.
